How to best support your Operations Manager.

Are the tasks you have assigned to the role realistic?

A recent survey showed that operations managers were often overloaded with tasks outside of logistics management, specialised tasks that fall into the category of Compliance and Human Resource management.

2. How many tasks are realistic?

When assigning and or reviewing tasks,  It is important to keep in mind the fair work legislation and the regulated hours for the role, especially with the latest 'right to disconnect' laws in Australia. You have a legal obligation to consider how  this affect an operations role?

With this in mind,  how many tasks have you assigned to the role, and what is the breakdown of each task?

A recent survey suggested that operations managers are assigned between 107-220 tasks over any given week.

When dividing those tasks by hours worked, and assessing the duration of each task with realistic time frames, what is the realistic achievement and success rate of all tasks assigned?

3. Success of all tasks assigned.

In assessing  the tasks assigned to the operations manager, you need to assess the successful conlcusion of each task.

It is well known within the transport industry that operations staff are often in the firing line when things go wrong and are expected to source an instant resolution.

This is the key reason you have hired an operations manager -  to manage the day-to-day operations and their ability to resolve issues quickly. With the industry mandated requirements in transport, the skill and competency of the operations manager is often at risk of burn out.

This burn out is not occuring because your operations manager is incompetent, this is occuring becuase your operations manager is now required to take on many roles within the business, due to the industry mandates, your operations manager is required to take on Human Resource Management, Compliance Management and is a responsible party in the Chain of Responsibility in NHVR.

This overload and burn out will ultimately leave your brand and business at risk of losing contracts and future business and at legal risk if your fleet isn't up to date mechanically, your policies are inneffective and not up to date with the latest NHVR requirements.

You, the business owner,  will often have to spend a significant amount of money training new staff hires every 2-3 years if not sooner, due to burnout and significant job overwhelm. This does not include high driver turnover due to disorganised business practices due to organisational overwhelm, which could see high turnover monthly for some transport companies.
